Founded in 1940, the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA) and its Affiliates operate on behalf of thoroughbred race horse owners, trainers and backstretch personnel throughout the United States and Canada.
The Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association (ITBOA) is a non-profit organization responsible for promoting the breeding and racing of Thoroughbreds in Iowa. The ITBOA currently represents nearly 500 Iowa-bred owners and breeders and is active in a variety of Thoroughbred programs.
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) administers the laws and rules for pari-mutuel wagering and racetracks and gambling at excursion gambling boats/racetrack enclosures/gambling structures to protect the public and to assure the integrity of licensed facilities and participants.
Prairie Meadows has played an important role in central Iowa since it opened in 1989. That’s because they are a nonprofit, locally-managed business, one of only two nonprofit casinos in the nation. Created in 2014 to be an organization representing equine veterinarians who work at the racetrack, North American Association of Racetrack Practitioners (NAARV)’s mission is to advance the health and welfare of the racehorse through evidence-based veterinary medicine.
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire and re-home Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding.
